Graces

Greek mythology β˜… Greece (origin)

The Graces are the goddesses of charm, beauty and the pleasure of good company in Greek tradition, usually three sisters attendant on the greater gods and named for splendour, mirth and abundance.

The Graces are usually three β€” most commonly named as splendour, good cheer and blooming abundance β€” though their number and parentage vary between sources, with different regions counting two or more and assigning them different mothers. They personify the qualities that make social life agreeable: grace of movement, charm, festivity, and the reciprocal giving and receiving of favour that the Greek word behind their name also denotes.

They function largely as attendants. They accompany the goddess of love, adorn and prepare gods for appearances, dance at divine gatherings, and are associated with the Muses and with Apollo in contexts of song and celebration. Their cult was real and in some places notably austere β€” one tradition recorded their worship on a particular island as conducted without music or garlands, which sits oddly against their usual associations and was explained by a story of grief interrupting a sacrifice.

In art they became one of the most durable groups in the European repertoire, shown as three linked figures, and the philosophical tradition read the linking as an image of how benefits circulate β€” given, received, returned. That reading is later than the cult and should not be read back into it, but it indicates what the figures were felt to be about.

[Generated Content] Read as a personality, the Graces come across as collectively rather than individually characterised β€” three names for one disposition, which the tradition never troubles to distinguish. What that disposition amounts to is unmixed agreeableness: they enhance, accompany and adorn, and they are never recorded refusing, contending, or wanting anything on their own account. The austere cult is the one place something else shows through, and it comes from outside them.
