The houris belong to the Islamic depiction of Paradise. The term derives from an expression describing eyes of a marked contrast between white and dark, and the scriptural descriptions emphasise purity, beauty, and a state untouched by the wear of the world — companions created for the garden rather than arriving in it from elsewhere. They appear as one element of a fuller picture of the afterlife that also includes gardens, rivers, shade and food.

Interpretation has varied enormously and continues to. Some readings take the descriptions literally and elaborate them, and a large body of later tradition does exactly that; others read them as figurative, as descriptions of a state of the soul, or as language necessarily inadequate to what it points at. Some commentators have held that the righteous of both sexes receive companionship appropriate to them rather than the descriptions applying in one direction only. The sources compiled in Western reference works generally reproduce the literal strand and rarely note the range.

As a bestiary entry the figure sits awkwardly, which is worth saying plainly: houris are not beings encountered in the world, have no folklore of interaction with people before death, and generate no episodes. What the tradition supplies is a description of a condition rather than a set of stories.
