The most remarkable feature of the Cirein cròin is its ability to alter its size at will, a characteristic that makes it an exceptionally dangerous predator.
In the account he intercepts a physician travelling to protect the king and turns him back, then has his followers approach in the guise of ascetics bringing fruit, concealing himself within one of the offerings as a small worm.
Ridden by one of the brothers he is an ordinary horse; ridden by all four he lengthens to carry them, and every retelling keeps that detail because it is the one thing about him that cannot be explained away as an unusually good animal.
Rakshasas are credited with formidable magical powers, including illusion (maya), flight, and the ability to change size and shape at will, and many are granted near-invincibility through boons won by ascetic penance (tapas) to gods such as Brahma or Shiva, as Ravana himself does.
