The colt pixy is the horse-shaped member of southern England's pixy tribe, recorded across Hampshire, Somerset, Dorset, and Cornwall under a cluster of spellings — colt pixie, colt piskie, and in Dorset colepexy. The eighteenth-century antiquarian record already has its method down: in Hampshire the name belonged to a spirit that took the shape of a horse, whickered — neighed — to catch the attention of real horses and their riders, and misled them into bogs. The later compendia add the familiar close of the trick: travelers and their mounts drawn off the safe road into mire or thicket, at which point the young horse simply vanishes.

Somerset gives the creature a second and quite different office. There the colt pixy stands guard over the apple orchard, a sprite that chases and frightens humans who come intending to damage the trees or steal the crop — a role it shares with the county's Appletree Man, and one that turns the prankster into a small agricultural policeman.
