Lotan is the seven-headed sea dragon of Canaanite myth, chaos's champion beside Yam and Mot against Baal, and the ancestor of the biblical Leviathan.

Lotan is the great serpent of Canaanite mythology as the Ugaritic texts preserve it: a seven-headed aquatic dragon, the personification of chaos, written in the consonantal script as ltn. Its epithets in the tablets became its names — the fleeing serpent, the twisting or tortuous serpent — and the compendia render the full style as the potentate with seven heads. In the mythic war over order it sided with the powers its nature belongs to: Yam, the sea, and Mot, death, in their attempt to overthrow the storm and fertility god Baal and restore the primordial chaos.

The war went against it. Baal defeated Mot, and to Lotan the storm god delivered the killing blow — the tradition adding that only a god had the power to destroy such a creature, though one strand of the scholarship keeps the uncertainty of the broken tablets about whether the serpent's slayer was Baal or his warrior sister. Either way the shape of the story is the region's oldest: the sea's dragon crushed so that the rain god's order can stand.

Lotan's longest life is downstream. The seven-headed twisting serpent of the Ugaritic tablets is widely read as the direct ancestor of the Hebrew Bible's Leviathan, whose own epithets — the fleeing serpent, the twisting serpent — repeat the Canaanite formulas almost letter for letter; the later Jewish and demonological elaborations of Leviathan are that inheritance grown monstrous in new theologies. This census keeps the ancestor and the descendant apart: the Leviathan names inherited from the registry have been set aside so that the Ugaritic dragon's entry names the Ugaritic dragon.
